The new Nairn Academy is a new secondary school built by Balfour Beatty for The Highland Council. It replaces the town’s 50-year-old school on the same site, at the southern edge of Nairn.
The three-storey building is laid out around a central atrium. It includes learning plazas, an open-plan library with a café, a large canteen and a new 3G sports pitch. It’s designed to Passivhaus standard as a low-energy building, and it will be home to between 745 and 800 pupils aged 11 to 18. Local residents will also be able to use its sports facilities and learning resource centre.
The package combined architectural metalwork with secondary steelwork. The atrium and staircase balustrades and handrails are in the most visible, heavily used parts of the school, so they needed a high-quality finish and long-term durability. The secondary steelwork supports key building services and fit-out, including the HRU units, window framing, lift shaft and sports hall equipment.
Great to work on this project, well done to all involved.
